EL RIO : Concert Will Raise Funds for New Gym
A benefit concert to raise money for a gymnasium in El Rio will be held Sunday at the Ventura County Fairgrounds.
The “oldies but goodies” concert will feature Al Wilson, Chuck Rio, Dodie Stevens, the Tokens and the Rivingtons.
Admission to the 7 p.m. show is $10 per person or $35 for a family of up of six. Tickets are on sale at Wherehouse record stores in Camarillo, Oxnard and Ventura and at Ticketmaster outlets.
The $1.9-million gym, to be located on the grounds of Rio del Valle School, 3100 N. Rose Ave., would be El Rio’s only indoor sports facility, said Rosann Gallien of Ventura County Supervisor John K. Flynn’s office, which is coordinating the project. The gym will serve El Rio and Nyeland Acres residents and will include basketball and volleyball courts, a boxing ring and rooms for meetings and after-school programs.
The Rio Elementary School District donated the land and $260,000 has been raised through benefit events and federal grants. For more information, call Flynn’s office at 654-2706.
