South Bay : Hotel Has a Vacancy for Loyola Students

Share

The dormitories at Loyola Marymount University in Westchester are so packed to the gills that school officials were forced to look elsewhere for student housing this fall. So nearly 80 freshmen have checked into the nearby Airport Marina Hotel.

It’s the first time in the school’s 81-year history that students are being put in off-campus housing.

University officials said a 10% increase in freshman enrollment is to blame. About 825 freshmen registered this fall, the largest freshman class since 1986, said spokesman Norm Schneider.

Students occupy 40 double-occupancy rooms on two floors of the hotel, which is about four blocks from campus. Each student pays $3,078 a year, including meals, to live at the hotel, about the same amount students pay for on-campus room and board.

Officials are hoping the hotel arrangement will be short-lived. Construction for a new dormitory is under way and the facility should open by the fall of 1996.
