A man suspected of robbing several hotels and motels throughout the county was arrested early Saturday morning after he was spotted by security guards acting suspiciously inside the Sheraton Hotel Newport Beach.

Hill Andrew Williams, 24, was stopped by Irvine police officers at 4:30 a.m. in the area of MacArthur Boulevard and Campus Drive after leaving the hotel. After pulling him over, officers discovered that Williams was carrying a revolver, Sgt. Dwight Henninger said.

A subsequent investigation linked Williams to a string of robberies in the past two months. Williams was held on five counts of robbery and one count of carrying a concealed weapon.

The sergeant said the robberies were distinctive in their method.

“These are not low-key robberies,” Henninger said. “[He] jumps over the counter, accosts the people working there and demands money. The robberies usually take place during the early morning hours and between $600 and $700 is taken.”

Williams, a resident of Moreno Valley, is being held at Orange County Jail on $50,000 bail.
