George Jones rushed for 147 yards and three touchdowns in leading San Diego State to a 33-9 victory over California on Saturday night.

Jones, who carried 24 times and scored each of his touchdowns on one-yard runs, set national junior college records last season with six touchdowns in one game and 34 in one season while playing for Bakersfield College.

The Aztecs also upset California last season, winning a 22-20 decision on a 32-yard field goal by Peter Holt on the game’s final play.

This year’s game started 15 minutes late--at 7:50 p.m.--because Jack Murphy Stadium hosted an 11-inning baseball game in the afternoon between the Philadelphia Phillies and San Diego Padres. Stadium grounds crew members took three hours to convert the field from baseball to football.

The Aztecs converted a blocked punt, an interception and a fumble recovery into two touchdowns and a field goal to take a 19-3 halftime lead.

Jones scored his first touchdown on the first play of the second quarter after Joe Jackson blocked a punt at the Golden Bears’ 11-yard line.

Holt’s extra-point attempt hit the right upright.

Holt kicked a 39-yard field goal 4:33 later to make it 9-0.

Only 27 seconds after that, Ken Overby scored on a two-yard pass from Billy Blanton following an interception by John McCartney at the Cal 31.

A 30-yard field goal by Holt with 6:09 left in the half made it 19-0.
