So overwhelming was the moment that the typically reserved cadets of the Air Force Academy stormed the home field and tore down the goalposts. The usually loquacious Coach Fisher DeBerry found himself at a loss for words.

Beau Morgan, shrugging off heat exhaustion, ran for one touchdown and passed for one, helping Air Force rout Brigham Young, 38-12, in a Western Athletic Conference game Saturday and end a 12-game losing streak to the Cougars.

With tears welling in his eyes, DeBerry said, “I’m very choked up. I don’t like to show my emotions, but I’m so happy for our players.”

The Air Force wishbone, which ranked No. 2 in the country in rushing last season, generated 523 yards, including 394 on the ground, compared to BYU’s 317 total yards.

The loss spoiled the BYU debut of quarterback Steve Sarkisian, a transfer from El Camino Junior College. He was sacked four times, threw two interceptions and fumbled once.

It was Air Force’s first victory over BYU at Falcon Stadium in 10 tries and its first victory overall since 1982 in the lopsided series, which BYU leads, 16-2.

Colorado State 31, Montana State 10--Fullback E.J. Watson rushed for 130 yards and a touchdown as the Rams beat the Division I-AA Bobcats at Fort Collins, Colo.

New Mexico State 45, Texas El Paso 17--Senior Cody Ledbetter passed for four touchdowns and Lucious Davis became New Mexico State’s career leader in receiving yards as the Aggies of the Big West beat the Miners of the WAC at Las Cruces, N.M.

New Mexico 45, Northern Arizona 21--The Lobos began the post-Stoney Case era by using two quarterbacks in an impressive nonconference victory over the Lumberjacks at Albuquerque.
