Central Los Angeles : Warrant Issued for Suspect in Slaying

Share

Los Angeles police have obtained a warrant for the arrest of a man suspected of killing a well-liked businessman outside a South-Central Los Angeles boxing gym.

Alonzo Payne, 23, was identified as the gunman who allegedly shot and killed Julian De Santiago, 38, during an attempted robbery near the Broadway Gym on Aug. 23, said Los Angeles Police Detective Paul Wright.

Police identified Payne, who lives in the neighborhood, after receiving anonymous tips and talking to witnesses. Wright said he believes police received the tips and cooperation because De Santiago was considered “a nice guy.”

“I think people are shocked by what happened and who it happened to,” Wright said.

De Santiago, who owned a plumbing business, left a widow and three young children.

Police plan to distribute a flyer with Payne’s picture this week. Police failed to find the suspect after serving a search warrant at a home last week. A second suspect has not been identified. Anyone with information is asked to call Wright at (213) 237-1310.
