Pickup Truck Driver Dies in Crash

A pickup truck driver died Tuesday in a crash on the Antelope Valley Freeway at Placerita Canyon, a spokeswoman for the California Highway Patrol said.

Authorities declined to identify the driver because his family had not been notified.

The driver was headed north in the fast lane when he drifted to the middle lane and struck a car, CHP Officer Wendy Moore said. The man then lost control, traveled across the dirt divider to the southbound side and was thrown out of the truck.

He suffered severe head injuries and was airlifted to Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 1:08 p.m., Moore said. She did not know if he was wearing a seat belt.

Moore said it was unclear whether the driver of the car was injured.

A tow truck driver who slowed to see the wreckage slammed into a CHP car at the accident site, damaging it, Moore said.
