San Gabriel Valley : South El Monte Seeks a Catchy Name

Share

Arcadia is the “Community of Homes.” San Gabriel is the “Mission City.” And now South El Monte wants its own catchy slogan to attract new businesses.

“We’re looking to develop a catch-phrase that will project South El Monte as place to raise a family and open a business,” said Greg Lantz, the city’s economic development coordinator.

The slogan is part of a $50,000 marketing campaign to persuade businesses to relocate to the central San Gabriel Valley city of 21,000, Lantz said. The winning motto will grace the cover of promotional materials.

The city’s previous mottoes include: “City of Achievement” and “Partners in Progress,” but local leaders felt that a new, punchy, image-making phrase was needed. It is not the city’s first effort at image enhancement. Last year the City Council considered changing the city’s name to Santa Anita, but rejected the idea after overwhelming opposition.

South El Monte will award $250 to anyone who lives or works in the city and comes up with the winning motto, Lantz said.

The deadline for slogan entries to City Hall is Sept. 30.
