South Bay : ALL ABOARD
The Los Angeles Harbor Department recently agreed to purchase 4.2 acres of rail right-of-way, tracks and equipment from Union Pacific railroad for $3.7 million. The deal will connect the Port of Los Angeles to a new cargo facility at Pier 300 on Terminal Island and auto import and lumber terminals in Wilmington, according to department spokesman Jeff Leong. The purchase also includes a rail bridge that crosses the Dominguez Channel.
“Ownership of these rail easements will make it easier for us to better serve the port,” Leong said. “We rely on trains heavily to transport cargo in and out of the port.”
The purchase was approved by the Harbor Commission on Aug. 23, according to Leong, but the purchase will not be complete until later this year.
