SENIOR SHUTTLE: The pay is low and the hours can be bad. But the upside is that the senior citizens who shuttle cars from the Port of Hueneme to nearby distribution centers get to drive some of the priciest, fanciest vehicles on the market (B1). . . . There’s no age minimum, but it turns out that most of his workers are retirees, says Mike Wallace, who employs about 35 shuttle drivers. . . . And that’s good, he says: “We don’t have to worry about things like hot-rodding.”

CROSS SECTION: The cross on the hill above the San Buenaventura Mission isn’t the first on that spot. . . . According to a book published for the mission’s bicentennial, the first cross stood for years, until a storm destroyed it in 1875. The new one was built on Sept. 9, 1912, on the 103rd anniversary of the dedication of the present mission church. . . . This cross, like the first, is made of Jeffrey pine cut from Santa Paula Canyon.

NEW U: Cal State University’s David Leveille believes a bold, innovative vision is needed to line up money for a four-year public institution in Ventura County (B5). He favors a campus with a high-tech flavor. . . . Interest in a Cal State education continues to rise, high-tech or not. Cal State Northridge’s Ventura campus expects 1,400 students this fall, 9% more than last year. Says its director, Joyce Kennedy: “We expect it to be an all-time high.”

TONS O’ TRASH: The Ventura County fair is gone, and so are its remnants, but the cleanup wasn’t an easy job. . . . The fairgrounds’ maintenance crew hauled away 770,000 pounds of trash and livestock waste during and after the 12-day fair, said operations chief Richard Tucker. Those 385 tons included recyclables, such as cans, paper--and 1,500 gallons of cooking oil. . . . Tucker deals with the job by adding more than 140 maintenance workers to his regular staff of 18 for the fair’s run.
