Sophomore tailbacks Herchell Troutman and Marlon Barnes each scored twice, and No. 10 Colorado parlayed an early 21-0 lead into a 42-14 rout of Colorado State on Saturday night.

Koy Detmer completed 18 of 26 passes for 255 yards and another score as the Buffaloes rang up 461 total yards in Rick Neuheisel’s first home game as head coach.

The Buffaloes (2-0) needed only 7:27 of the opening quarter to open up their 21-0 advantage. They led, 28-7, at the half and scored on their opening series of the second half for a 35-7 margin.

Troutman carried six times on Colorado’s first possession, including a four-yard scoring run to cap a 62-yard drive with 10:53 left.

The Buffaloes went 96 yards in three plays for their second score, highlighted by Troutman’s reception of a short pass that he turned into an 89-yard gain. Barnes ran 4 yards on the next play, and Colorado led 14-0 with 7:42 left.

Nine seconds later, Colorado scored again. On CSU’s next play from scrimmage, defensive tackle Kerry Hicks broke up an attempted handoff from quarterback Daren Wilkinson to Renard Carn on an apparent reverse, forcing a fumble which Hicks recovered in the end zone.

CSU (1-1) then put together a long drive, kept alive by a defensive holding penalty against Colorado on a punt, that ended on T.J. Cunningham’s interception at the 1-yard line. Colorado couldn’t advance past its 5, however, and after a punt, CSU needed to march only 29 yards for its first touchdown. Wilkinson passed 9 yards to tight end Justin Shull for the TD on the first play of the second quarter.

Moments later, Colorado fumbled away a punt return, but CSU’s Matt McDougal missed a field-goal try, as he would again after another fumbled punt return in the third quarter.

The Buffs marched 91 yards in 13 plays to go up 28-7 late in the half. Barnes ran seven times for 43 yards on the drive, including the final 4.

Wilkinson’s 40-yard pass to Paul Turner helped move the Rams to the CU 18 in the closing minutes of the half, but the drive ended on an incomplete pass on fourth down.

Troutman bolted 15 yards up the middle to cap an 82-yard scoring drive on the first possession of the second half, giving Colorado a 35-7 cushion. The Buffaloes kept the drive going on a fake-punt play.
