NEWPORT BEACH : Council Lifts Ban on Dogs on Beaches

Share

The city’s canine population has won its day in the sun.

The City Council voted unanimously Monday to lift a summer ban on dogs on the beach.

Beginning next summer, dogs will be allowed on the beach year-round before 9 a.m. and after 5 p.m. In the past, they had not been allowed at all from June 15 to Sept. 15.

In other action, the council agreed to move forward with a plan to consolidate its commercial waste operations.

The city now uses 13 independent haulers to collect commercial refuse. The General Services Department recommended using one hauler to ensure uniform service and fees citywide.

Council members said that independent haulers could continue their operations, however, if they would agree to certain terms and pay the city a fee.

Countywide commercial rates would be used as a reference point for fees, said David E. Niederhaus, director of general services.

“We are going to sit down and map out a strategy to research the non-exclusive franchise,” he said.
