COSTA MESA : City Acts to Mitigate Effects of Toll Road

Share

As construction on the San Joaquin Hills Transportation Corridor progresses, Costa Mesa is preparing for the increased traffic that the toll road is expected to bring to the city.

Bill Morris, director of public services, told the City Council on Monday that $110 million worth of improvements planned for the Corona del Mar and San Diego freeways are on schedule.

Within the next 12 months, he said, two lanes will be added to the Corona del Mar Freeway and widening will begin on the northbound San Diego Freeway near Harbor Boulevard.

Other upgrades will include widening the interchange between the two freeways and adding a car-pool lane to the Corona del Mar Freeway.

“We were concerned about the effects of the toll road,” Morris said. “We needed to make sure it does not lead to jam-ups on the city streets.”

Mayor Joe Erickson said that although he shares concerns that the toll road might create traffic jams in Costa Mesa, he is equally concerned about residents who will be affected by the freeway upgrades.

Officials of the city, the California Department of Transportation and the Orange County Transportation Authority will meet with Costa Mesa residents on Oct. 5 to explain the projects and answer questions about them.
