PBS Wins 11 Documentary, News Emmys

PBS walked off with 11 of 42 statuettes handed out in New York Tuesday night at the 16th annual Emmy Awards for news and documentary programming.

The PBS awards were divided among eight programs, including “National Geographic,” “Frontline,” “P.O.V.” and “The American Experience.”

Among the other Emmys awarded for programming in 1994, nine went to ABC, eight to NBC, five to TBS, two each to CBS, Discovery and A&E;, and one apiece to Fox, the Learning Channel and syndicated programming.

“Dateline NBC” and TBS’ “National Geographic Explorer” were the most honored individual programs, winning five Emmys each.

Here is a partial list of winners as selected by the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences:

General coverage of a single breaking news story (program): “The Making of a Summit Series,” on “Nightline,” ABC.

General coverage of a single breaking news story (segments): “The Flood,” on “Dateline NBC,” NBC; “Minute by Minute: The River’s Edge,” on “Dateline NBC,” NBC.

Instant coverage of a single breaking news story (program): “The End of the Search for O.J. Simpson,” on “Nightline,” ABC.

Background/analysis of a single current story (program): “While America Watched: The Bosnia Tragedy,” on “Peter Jennings Reporting,” ABC.

Background/analysis of a single current story (segments): “Tragedy in Rwanda,” on “Now With Tom Brokaw and Katie Couric,” NBC.

Investigative journalism (program): “Of Human Bondage: Slavery Today,” on “Turning Point,” ABC.

Investigative journalism (segments): “Rush to Read,” on “PrimeTime Live,” ABC; “Semipalatinsk,” on “60 Minutes,” CBS.

Coverage of a continuing news story (program): “The Kevorkian File,” on “Frontline,” PBS.
