Central Los Angeles : Mexico Independence Celebrations on Tap

In one of Southern California’s largest Mexican Independence observances, celebrants will gather Friday to commemorate Father Miguel Hidalgo’s battle cry against Spain. The activities will be held on the Spring Street steps of Los Angeles City Hall from 7 p.m. to 11:15 p.m. City workers will close off Spring Street between Temple and 1st Streets in front of City Hall from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. today and from 10 a.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Saturday.

The celebration will continue during the weekend at Downtown’s Olvera Street Plaza, where a free festival features live bands playing mariachi and norteno music, folklorico dancers, traditional Mexican food, and games from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.

In Huntington Park, a speech by Mexican Consul General Jose Angel Pescador Osuna will be followed by the raising of the Mexican flag at noon on Friday at the Huntington Park Civic Center, 6550 Miles Ave. There will be free entertainment
