White’s Career Thrown for Loss Again

Share

Russell White’s hopes of establishing an NFL career took another disappointing turn Wednesday when the former Crespi High and California running back was placed on waivers by the Green Bay Packers.

White, a backup to Green Bay starter Edgar Bennett, did not play in either of the Packers’ two games and was not in uniform Monday night during a 27-24 victory over the Chicago Bears, a team spokesperson said.

White, 24, signed as a free agent with the Packers in February. He was out of football last season after being cut by the Rams, who drafted him in the third round in 1993. An unproductive rookie season consisted of two carries for 10 yards and eight kickoff returns for 122 yards.

During his time off in ‘94, White failed to attract offers from NFL teams. He had only one workout, with the San Francisco 49ers.

The lack of interest in White is in sharp contrast to his high school and college careers. He was an All-American at Cal, where he set a school rushing record with 3,246 yards. At Crespi he finished as the state’s all-time leading rusher with 5,998 yards and 94 touchdowns.

Valley is ranked eighth in the state and Moorpark is 14th in the J.C. Athletic Bureau coaches’ poll.

Moorpark’s Kenneth Land and Tim Wolleck, and Valley’s Troy Tuck were among those selected state co-players of the week.

Land, a freshman defensive back, had two interceptions, four unassisted tackles and assisted on 10 others in a 19-0 victory over Ventura in a Western State Conference interdivisional game. Wolleck, a freshman kicker from Simi Valley High, booted field goals of 36, 23, 44 and 47 yards.

Tuck, a sophomore linebacker from Moeller High in Cincinnati, had six tackles and returned an interception for a 23-yard touchdown in a 51-3 victory over West L.A. in a WSC South Division game.

Chris Stevens, baseball coach at Oxnard College the past four seasons, has been hired as a full-time assistant at Cal State Northridge.

Stevens, 29, has a one-year contract. He replaces Mike Batesole, who moved from assistant to interim head coach last month after Bill Kernen’s surprise resignation.

Before taking the Oxnard job, Stevens was an assistant at Azusa Pacific for three years and head coach at Western Christian High for two seasons. He played at Santa Maria Righetti High and Azusa Pacific.
