Calabasas : Hair Dryer Sparks Fire at Pet Cemetery

Share

A fire at the Pet Memorial Cemetery in Calabasas destroyed a wooden shed Friday morning where a Chihuahua was being prepared for burial.

The fire was sparked accidentally shortly after 10 a.m. when the hair dryer an employee was using to dry the dead dog’s hair caused a power surge, said park manager Sandy Dunaway.

The employee, who had left the hair dryer unattended for a couple of minutes, was not injured, she said.

Firefighters, who doused the flames within 25 minutes, retrieved the pet’s remains. The pet’s owners were “very upset” to learn of the fire, Dunaway said, but decided to go ahead with the funeral today as planned.

The 68-year-old cemetery is the final resting place for a number of famous pets, including Petey, the black-eyed dog from “Our Gang,” and Topper, Hopalong Cassidy’s horse.
