ANAHEIM — Running backs Carlos Martin and David David were all Magnolia needed for a 21-0 nonleague victory over Bolsa Grande Saturday night at Glover Stadium.
Martin rushed for 148 yards in 24 carries and David added 61 yards in 15 carries for the Sentinels (1-1), who outrushed Bolsa Grande, 304-49. Martin and David each rushed for a touchdown in the game.
On Magnolia’s first possession of the second quarter, David completed a seven-play, 44-yard drive with a two-yard touchdown run, giving Magnolia a 7-0 lead. Martin rushed for 40 of the 44 yards in the drive.
Special teams proved costly for the Matadors. Two punt attempts resulted in two safeties, when one snap sailed out of Bolsa Grande’s end zone and another was fumbled and recovered by Bolsa Grande in their end zone.
After the first safety made the score 9-0 late in the second quarter, a 10-yard touchdown run by Martin made it 16-0 at halftime.
Bolsa Grande’s opening possession in the second half resulted in the second safety of the game, and on the next possession, James Penner kicked a 30-yard field goal for Magnolia to finish the scoring.
Magnolia quarterback Eric Freund was more of a factor on the ground, rushing for 51 yards in 11 carries.
Offense was at a minimum for Bolsa Grande (0-2), which had only three first downs and crossed Magnolia’s side of the field only twice.
