A word of advice to the Cal Lutheran football team: Keep Chapman off the schedule.

The Kingsmen took a beating from Chapman in their opener, 38-7, Saturday night. It was every bit the same powerful Chapman team that beat them, 27-7, in their 1994 finale.

Cal Lutheran fell behind early and trailed, 17-0, at halftime.

The Kingsmen had a difficult time generating offense and didn’t score until late in the game when Ryan Huisenga connected with Ivan Moreno on a five-yard pass.

Huisenga completed 19 of 31 passes for 182 yards.

“Our mistakes stopped us, not their great play,” Huisenga said. “I think we drove the ball really well and we got on a roll, but we made mistakes.”

Chapman (1-1) had 410 total yards, Cal Lutheran 236.

Curtis Robinson completed six of 14 for 139 yards and gained 52 yards in 14 carries for the Panthers.

“I think we found out a lot of things about ourselves tonight,” Cal Lutheran Coach Joe Harper said. “I hope to use this as a beneficial experience.

“We didn’t play very good. We played a very good team, but we made them look even better.”

The Panthers scored first with 3 1/2 minutes remaining in the first quarter. Darnell Morgan broke through three Cal Lutheran defenders on the left side and sprinted 69 yards to the end zone. Bill Hamlin’s extra point gave Chapman a 7-0 lead.

Robinson connected with Matrice Stephens for a 34-yard score with 5:42 left in the second quarter. Hamlin kicked the extra point and added a 37-yard field goal a few minutes later to give the Panthers a 17-0 lead at the half.

The touchdowns kept coming.

Chapman increased its lead to 24-0 when Robinson connected with John Haiduc on a 54-yard touchdown play with 9:46 left in the third quarter. The pass came one play after a 21-yard touchdown run by Morgan was called back because of holding.

The Panthers opened the fourth quarter with another touchdown, this time a 19-yard pass from Robinson to Morgan that capped a seven-play, 60-yard drive.
