OXNARD : INS to Process Forms at Local Session

Share

Dealing with a huge demand for green card renewals and a backlog of applicants for citizenship, officials from the Immigration and Naturalization Service will be in Oxnard on Thursday to process requests from local residents.

The daylong session will take place at the National Multi-Ethnic Families Assn. at 4015 Saviers Road.

Residents who would normally have to go to Los Angeles to process their paperwork can do the job in Oxnard, said Armando Garcia, the legal affairs director for the organization.

Changes in immigration law and a new political climate have resulted in a huge number of green card holders applying for either U.S. citizenship or new cards, Garcia said.

Because the INS is requiring that all green cards be updated by March of next year with newer ones that are harder to forge, legal residents are flocking to INS offices to renew their cards, he said.

“We’re expecting more than 200 people,” Garcia said.

To attend, applicants must make an appointment by today with the National Multi-Ethnic Families Assn., he said. For more information, call 385-7222.
