COLLEGE FOOTBALL DAILY REPORT : UCLA : Their Styles Differ, but Effect Is the Same

UCLA middle linebackers Brian Willmer and Donnie Edwards could not be more different. Edwards’ forte is his speed and versatility, his ability to roam all the way from the defensive line to the secondary. Willmer’s forte is his strength and aggressiveness, his ability to provide a force in the middle.

“Some guys have fun scoring touchdowns,” said the 6-foot-2, 240-pound Willmer. “My fun is trying to tear somebody’s head off. My fun is trying to [knock down] somebody in the backfield.”

He will be getting plenty of chances to do that in the next month as he fills in for Edwards, who is sidelined because of a fractured vertebra.

The Bruins are planning to use tailback Skip Hicks, who returned last Saturday, a month after undergoing arthroscopic knee surgery, for anywhere from six to 10 carries this Saturday against Washington State. . . . Fullback Greg Ford, out for nearly a year following back surgery, has not been ruled out for this season. Coach Terry Donahue says there is “a chance” Ford could be back after the team’s bye week next month.
