NEWPORT BEACH : Revamped Nightclub Seeks OK to Stay Open
The Thunderbird nightclub, a frequent target of neighborhood complaints about noise and rowdiness, has revised its entertainment format and is asking city officials allow it to continue operating.
On Monday, the City Council will hear final public testimony on whether the Lido Marina Village club should stay open. The council is to vote on the issue Oct. 9.
The club’s predecessor, Bacchus, which closed last spring, had drawn similar complaints. When a new owner took over the operation, the city allowed the club to operate for six months while it cleaned up its act.
Owner Greg Mulholland remodeled the interior of the club at 3505 Via Oporto, changed the menu and adopted a new entertainment format to include magic and comedy acts. A family brunch on Sundays with comedy and magic shows for children is also being considered, club managers said.
Monday’s hearing will begin at 7 p.m. in council chambers at City Hall, 3300 Newport Blvd.
