OXNARD/CAMARILLO : Essay Competition Marks Latino Heritage
An organization at the Point Mugu Navy base is sponsoring an essay contest for seventh- through 12th-graders in the Oxnard, Camarillo and El Rio areas to commemorate Hispanic Heritage Month.
The Hispanic Employment Program Committee, a nonprofit organization that provides assistance to Latinos through outreach programs, is offering a $100 savings bond to the top essayist. Other winners will receive a portable radio, bowling tickets, movie passes or other prizes.
Students may write essays on either of the following topics: a Latino person or organization that has contributed to the advancement of Latinos in the United States, or a Latino who has been recognized for his or her heroic military service.
The essay, which must be postmarked by Friday, must be double-spaced and no longer than three pages.
It should be mailed to: Commander, Code 734000E (Attn: Debby Casillas), Naval Air Warfare Center Weapons Division, 521 9th St., Point Mugu 93042-5002.
The top essay winner will be honored at the Hispanic Employment Program Committee’s awards presentation luncheon on Oct. 10.
