Marine Goes Private
The Orange County Marine Institute will save Orange County $61,000 a year in site maintenance and financial service fees by becoming a private, nonprofit organization. More on the institute:
* Provides hands-on experience through a variety of programs, including ocean research techniques, surf safety and tide pool exploration
* Formed in 1977
* 75,000 students visit the institute annually
* 25,000 visitors participate in programs annually
* $25-million to $30-million expansion would increase visits by students and others to more than 150,000 per year
