A pilot en route to Torrance from Stockton crash-landed his single-engine plane in the back yard of a North Hills home Wednesday night, an Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman said Thursday.

FAA spokeswoman Carol Long said the pilot suffered only minor injuries despite the plane bouncing off a tree before it crash-landed. There was also no damage to the residents of the home or on the ground. The plane was badly damaged, however.

The unidentified man was piloting the Beechcraft Bonanza near the home Wednesday about 11:40 p.m. when he experienced engine trouble.

He tried to make an emergency landing at Van Nuys Airport, which was close by, but the plane came down just near the northern border of the airport in the 16500 block of Napa Street, Long said.
