COLLEGE FOOTBALL / DAILY REPORT : USC : Haas, Bonds Will Fill In on Defense

Share

The concern Coach John Robinson expressed Tuesday leading into Saturday’s game against Arizona State became even more acute with the suspension of two key defensive starters on Thursday. Robinson had said, “They’ve lost a couple of games, but they’ve made a lot of 30-yard plays in four games and no one’s done that to us yet--they’ll test us.”

After practice, Robinson, in announcing the one-game suspensions of linebacker Errick Herrin, defensive end Israel Ifeanyi and tailback Shawn Walters, said Brian Haas will start for Herrin and Marcus Bonds will replace Ifeanyi.

Delon Washington, he added, will replace Walters.

USC is now thin at tailback, with starter Leonard Green out because of a sprained foot. LaVale Woods figures to back up Washington.

Arizona State defeated Texas El Paso (45-20) and Oregon State (20-11) and lost to Washington (23-20) and Nebraska (77-28).

The Sun Devils are 6-5 against the Trojans. The schools haven’t played the past two seasons, but USC has won three of the last four meetings.

Wide receiver Keyshawn Johnson, when someone tried to compare him to UCLA receiver Kevin Jordan:

“Kevin Jordan? It’s not even close. Kevin Jordan’s on one level, I’m on another.”
