Kosi scored on both sides of the ball, rushing for four touchdowns and recovering a blocked punt in the end zone for another score.

“We needed a victory to get this team going,” Vaquero Coach Doug Case said. “We played some good teams in the preseason and went 0-3, but playing good teams is what it’s all about.”

Rancho Alamitos only ran four offensive plays in the first quarter, but led, 22-0, after 12 minutes. Kosi ran 54 yards on the Vaqueros’ first play from scrimmage to give them a 7-0 lead with 8 minutes 3 seconds left in the first quarter.

On the next series, Bolsa Grande (0-4, 0-1) was forced to punt. A high snap was recovered by Jesse Gutierrez at the Matadors’ one and on the next play, John Frank passed to Bubba Harris for a 14-0 lead.

Bolsa Grande had trouble punting again on its next series as Joey McMahan’s kick was blocked by Frank Ortiz. Kosi picked up the ball in the end zone for the touchdown and a two-point pass from Frank to Steve Collins made it 22-0 with 3:23 left in the first quarter.

Rancho added three more touchdowns before halftime on a 30-yard pass from Frank to Aaron Trigg, and one- and 32-yard runs by Kosi.
