ORANGE COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL PREP EXTRA : Esperanza’s Mistakes Lift Long Beach Poly : Football: The Aztecs fumble three times in a 24-19 loss to the Jackrabbits.

An opportunistic Long Beach Poly football team converted four Esperanza turnovers into a 24-19 victory over the Aztecs Friday night at Valencia High.

Poly (4-0), ranked fifth in Division I, took advantage of three Esperanza fumbles and one interception return for a touchdown to take a 24-12 halftime lead.

Esperanza (2-2), ranked fourth in the county and ninth in Division I, took a 6-0 lead with 4:54 left in the first quarter on the first of three touchdown passes by junior quarterback Dave Parrish. Pat Swanson was on the receiving end of a 53-yard scoring pass, one of his eight receptions for 153 yards.

The Jackrabbits’ Dwayne Samples recovered Aztec running back Jamal Footman’s fumble at the Esperanza 41 and Akka-Ar Mosos scored five plays later on a three-yard run to put Poly up, 7-6.

Esperanza got the lead back with 11:12 left in the first half as Parrish connected with Brian Forth on a 37-yard touchdown pass. But Poly took the lead for good one minute later when quarterback Morris Smith raced 61 yards in to the end zone.

Poly picked up another fumble on the ensuing kickoff and Jerry Reynoso converted it into a 30-yard field goal. The Jackrabbits capped their scoring when Cedric Jones picked off a Parrish pass and returned it 82 yards for touchdown with 5:35 remaining in the first half.

Swanson collected his second touchdown from 11 yards out with 3:30 left in the third quarter.
