Seahawks Stop Elway, Win, 27-10 : AFC: Warren rushes for 115 yards and three touchdowns as Seattle wins second consecutive game.

Chris Warren outscored John Elway and left the Denver Broncos without a chance.

Warren scored three touchdowns on short runs and rushed for 115 yards Sunday as Seattle’s defense stopped Elway long enough for a 27-10 victory.

An enthusiastic Kingdome crowd of 49,914 roared as Seattle ended a five-game losing streak against the Broncos. It was the Seahawks’ second victory in a row.

Warren said Coach Dennis Erickson brought a new attitude from the University of Miami to the Seahawks, who haven’t made the playoffs since 1988.

“We feel we can compete with anybody in the league and it doesn’t matter if they have Elway or [Joe] Montana,” Warren said. “This game feels real good. The touchdowns and the stats look good, but the win looks better.”

The Seahawks (2-2), who ranked next-to-last in the NFL in total defense going in, gave up only a 26-yard Elway touchdown pass to Mike Pritchard with 7:48 left.

“Mistakes are killing us,” Elway said. “We got down there twice early in the game and got nothing and that hurts. We’re searching for answers in a lot of different areas and we better find them in a hurry.”

Warren had his second consecutive 100-yard rushing game in 24 carries, and it was his 15th career 100-yard rushing game. He also scored touchdowns on a one-yard run in the second quarter and a four-yard run in the third.

Seattle’s Rick Mirer completed 16 of 24 passes for 222 yards. Rookie receiver Joey Galloway caught four passes for 89 yards, and gained 54 yards on his first three carries of the season.

“There’s no secret we’re going to get Joey the ball every way we can,” Mirer said. “He’s just a rookie, but it’s coming together for him.”

For the second game in a row, Seattle gained more than 400 yards, the first time the Seahawks have had back-to-back 400-yard games since 1988. The Seahawks had 422 yards, the most against Denver this season, and they rushed for 230 yards.

Elway completed 19 of 37 passes for 209 yards and one touchdown and no interceptions, but lost a crucial fumble in the opening quarter.

“We had the opportunities early and got no points when we should have had two touchdowns,” Denver Coach Mike Shanahan said. “We got five or six defensive starters banged up who had to come out of the game and then we didn’t play as well as we normally play.”

The Broncos’ most serious injury was a sprained right knee sustained by backup defensive tackle Shane Dronett in the second quarter. Denver also lost starting cornerback Ray Crockett in the second quarter when he left the game because of a strained left hamstring.

The Broncos (2-3) scored on all 12 opportunities inside the opponents’ 20 in their first four games, but Elway fumbled on a fourth-and-one sneak and Eugene Robinson recovered in the first quarter.
