PIRU : Building Contract for Clinic to Be Weighed

Ventura County supervisors today will consider awarding a $219,000 contract to construct a satellite health-care clinic in Piru.

If the contract is approved, Ventura-based Coffman Construction Co. would relocate seven portable buildings from the Ventura County Medical Center campus in Ventura to Piru, officials said.

The company would also be responsible for constructing a foundation, a parking lot and hooking up utilities.

The clinic, which is scheduled to open in November, is needed to better serve the residents of Fillmore and Piru, officials said. Those residents must now travel to Santa Paula or Ventura for medical care.

The eighth of its kind in the county, the clinic will be staffed by two doctors and is expected to be open about 2 1/2 days a week.

The county Board of Supervisors approved a 10-year lease in July for a clinic site. The lease, which will be paid out of the medical center’s budget, calls for rent payments of $500 a month, with a 3% increase each year.

In addition to sites in Santa Paula and Ventura, the county operates satellite clinics in Oxnard, Simi Valley, Thousand Oaks and Moorpark.
