Kasparov Rolls to Third Win

Garry Kasparov of Russia took a giant step Monday toward retaining his title of Professional Chess Assn. world champion by defeating Viswanathan Anand of India in the 13th game of their world championship in New York.

With seven games to go, Kasparov leads the match, 7 1/2 to 5 1/2.

Kasparov has dominated the match since losing the ninth game Sept. 25. He has won three of the four succeeding games, and Anand had to work hard to save a draw in the other. In order for Anand to dethrone Kasparov, he must score five points in the remaining seven games.

In Monday’s game, Kasparov, as Black, began with the Sicilian Dragon, the defense with which he scored a lucky win Thursday. Anand, not surprised this time by Kasparov’s choice of the Dragon, had prepared an unusual idea on move 12. It proved ineffective, thanks to Black’s excellent 18th move. Anand then made a poor decision. Rather than accepting a small disadvantage, he opened the center with his faulty 19th move. He gained a pawn, but his king came under attack. A few energetic moves by Black finished him off.

Speaking about the Dragon, Kasparov said: “It took a lot of preparation and courage to play a risky opening.”

“It looked easy, but there’s a lot of tension just behind the curtain in this match,” he added.
