Kasparov Wins, Widens Lead

Share

Garry Kasparov increased his lead over Viswanathan Anand to three points by winning the 14th game of their Professional Chess Assn. world championship Tuesday in New York.

Kasparov has four wins, one loss and nine draws for a score of 8 1/2-5 1/2 in the best-of-20-game match.

Kasparov needs to total 10 1/2 points to collect the $1-million prize offered by Intel, the PCA sponsor. That means he could lose two of the remaining six games, draw the other four, and still win the match.

Anand faces a daunting task. He must score another five points, which requires at least four wins and two draws.

In Tuesday’s game, Anand, playing Black, used the rarely-seen Center Counter Defense. Kasparov obtained only a small advantage from the opening, justifying Anand’s choice. But Kasparov took control of the position later, with aggressive 22nd, 25th, 27th and 28th moves.

When White’s pieces converged on Black’s king, Anand had to accept an inferior endgame. He resigned as soon as Kasparov picked off one of his vulnerable pawns.

“The match is still on but I think the fight for the title is over,” Kasparov told the post-game news conference on the observation deck of the World Trade Center.

Today is a rest day and Game 15 will be played on Thursday.
