Council to Address Farmland Protection
Concerned about mushrooming growth on Ventura County farmland, the Ventura City Council will consider a resolution Monday to support development guidelines set by the county and its cities a decade ago.
The resolution reaffirms the city’s support of the Guidelines for Orderly Development in light of a proposed housing development on 195 acres of Somis lemon and orange orchards.
In July, the Board of Supervisors voted 3 to 2 to allow a developer to apply for zoning changes on the farmland.
At a meeting of the Assn. of Ventura County Cities in late August, city leaders expressed concern with the supervisors’ actions on the proposed Knightsbridge development.
“The AVCC members believe that the Knightsbridge proposal raises a number of issues calling for reaffirming, strengthening, and clarifying the Guidelines for Orderly Development,” a report to the City Council states.
The resolution states that Ventura County should discourage urban developments in unincorporated areas.
The Guidelines for Orderly Development were adopted in 1985 to clarify where urban growth should and should not occur in the county.
