Sedrick Shaw gained 250 yards and scored a touchdown as Iowa stayed undefeated after four games with a 21-7 victory Saturday over Michigan State.

Shaw, who had topped 100 yards in each of three previous victories, seemed impossible to bring down, breaking tackles behind the line of scrimmage and finding room after holes had closed.

Michigan State, 2-2-1 overall and 0-1-1 in the Big Ten, showed no consistent momentum on offense but still had two excellent opportunities to narrow the score.

With the Hawkeyes leading, 14-7, in the fourth quarter, Spartan tailback Marc Renaud carried to the Iowa nine-yard line, then fumbled. Todd Schultz threw an interception in the end zone with 2:41 remaining.

Iowa, playing its first Big Ten game of the season, took the lead in the third quarter when Matt Sherman connected with Tim Dwight on an 11-yard touchdown pass. The two-point conversion put the Hawkeyes ahead, 14-7.

Shaw’s touchdown with 12:48 in the fourth quarter capped a 57-yard drive.

Iowa rolled up 524 yards and held Michigan State to only 31 yards rushing. The Hawkeyes were so dominant on offense that punter Nick Gallery wasn’t needed until late in the third quarter.

Michigan State’s lone score was a two-yard run by Scott Greene in the second quarter.
