Calabasas : Coretta Scott King to Lecture at Soka
Coretta Scott King, widow of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., will speak Thursday at Soka University in Calabasas on the legacy of the slain civil rights leader and affirmative action.
King was often a substitute speaker for her husband, who was assassinated in 1968. Since then, she has dedicated her life to promoting her husband’s philosophy of nonviolence and equality for all people.
Coretta Scott King, who was born in Mariou, Ala., met her husband in Boston, while she was studying to be a concert singer at the New England Conservatory of Music and he was a doctoral student in theology at Boston University. They married in 1953 and had four children.
Shortly after her husband’s death, she established the Martin Luther King Center for Nonviolent Social Change in Atlanta.
The free talk, part of Soka University’s Human Rights Lecture Series, will begin at 7 p.m. on the campus at 26800 W. Mulholland Highway, Calabasas. Seating is limited and reservations are required. For information, call (818) 878-3780.
