VENTURA : Lawmaker to Head Schools for a Day

Assemblyman Brooks Firestone will serve as superintendent of the Ventura Unified School District for a day later this month, officials said.

Firestone--a Republican representing Ventura, Santa Paula and Ojai in the 35th Assembly District--will visit Ventura and Buena high schools and possibly other campuses in the 25-school district Oct. 25, Supt. Joseph Spirito said.

Spirito said he also hopes to show Firestone the overcrowded conditions at some Ventura schools. Firestone in the past has been opposed to changing a state law requiring that school construction bond issues receive two-thirds approval from voters, Spirito said.

A Ventura bond is needed in the next two to five years to finance construction of a new high school, middle school and possibly elementary school on the city’s eastern end, he said.

“I would like to persuade him that a simple majority vote for bond measures is more appropriate,” Spirito said.
