Wake Forest couldn’t have played better for almost a quarter against the nation’s top- ranked team. But then, boom!

Danny Kanell passed for 323 yards and five touchdowns in the first half as top-ranked Florida State scored 41 points in less than 15 minutes on its way to a 72-13 Atlantic Coast Conference victory over Wake Forest on Saturday at Tallahassee, Fla.

“Most teams we see generally have a weakness, but Florida State has no weaknesses on offense,” Wake Forest Coach Jim Caldwell said. “They really stretch you defensively. Whatever you do, they take advantage of it.”

Although he had two passes intercepted, Kanell teamed with four players on scoring passes as the Seminoles gained 460 yards by halftime and built a 41-13 lead.

Kanell, who has thrown 21 touchdown passes this season, completed 28 of 36 for 342 yards before leaving the game after the first series of the second half.

Warrick Dunn ran for more than 100 yards for the sixth consecutive game, gaining 112 yards in 11 carries. Dunn has gained 801 yards and averages 10.3 yards a carry.

The Seminoles, 6-0 overall and 4-0 in the ACC, are perfect in 28 ACC games since joining the league in 1992.

Wake Forest (1-6, 0-4) actually kept Florida State scoreless for the first 11:14 of the game.

“They were doing some good things and getting some good pressure on me, but we knew it was just a matter of time before we’d start clicking,” Kanell said.

Florida State backup quarterback Thad Busby threw just four passes after replacing Kanell.

No. 19 Virginia 44, Duke 30--The Cavaliers scored 31 second-half points to beat the Blue Devils at Charlottesville, Va.

Mike Groh completed 20 of 41 passes for a school-record 346 yards and four touchdowns for Virginia (6-2, 5-1). His numbers would have been even better had it not been for nine dropped passes in the first three quarters.

Tiki Barber ran for a career-best 185 yards in 30 carries, with 117 coming after halftime. He scored on a nine-yard run and a 11-yard pass play.

Duke (2-5, 0-4) lost despite quarterback Spence Fischer, who completed 35 of 56 passes for 360 yards and three touchdowns.

“I asked our kids to play hard and get better, which they are doing,” Duke Coach Fred Goldsmith said. “I saw some togetherness and intensity out there that has been missing. They played better today than they have in all of 1995.”

Georgia Tech 27, North Carolina 25--The Yellow Jackets (4-2, 3-1) got rushing touchdowns from Donnie Davis, Charles Wiley and C.J. Williams to defeat the Tar Heels (3-3, 1-2) at Atlanta.
