WESTMINSTER : Group Selects City for Home Repair Effort

Share

The Orange County chapter of a national organization that helps repair the homes of elderly, disabled or low-income residents has chosen Westminster and Santa Ana as the sites for its volunteer effort in April.

The group, Christmas in April, organizes one-day blitzes to repair and rehabilitate chosen homes. The work will be done on the last Saturday in April.

The organization plans to target about 20 homes in the two cities. Last year, the group gathered about 800 volunteers who worked on 16 homes and three shelters in Garden Grove, Stanton and Fountain Valley.

Westminster “seems like a good target for us, with its high number of elderly people and a diverse population,” said Kay Kelly, founder of the Orange County chapter. “We would like to serve a more diverse population in Orange County, to find people who fall through the cracks and don’t receive help from other agencies or organizations.”

Last week, the Westminster City Council directed city staff to help identify homeowners who might need help.

“I’m very pleased that they will be helping disabled residents,” Councilwoman Margie L. Rice said.

Christmas in April is a national organization that was started in the state of Washington in 1983.
