FOUNTAIN VALLEY : Police Cars to Get Mobile Computers
The Police Department has moved a step closer to becoming a paperless operation, with the approval this week of mobile computers for about 20 police cars.
The computers will give officers instant access to information and will allow them to prepare their reports in the field, instead of having to return to the office.
The City Council on Tuesday approved the $239,920 mobile data system, expected to be in operation by next March.
Capt. Bill De Nisi, who is heading the project, said that the department has received $179,940 in federal grant money to develop the computer data system. The council approved spending an additional $59,980.
De Nisi said the system will enable officers in the field to perform warrant and license plate checks and access information about registrations and stolen vehicles.
Police Chief Elvin G. Miali said that officers will be able to spend more time in the community and less at the station.
