Free Weekly Newspaper Debuts: The publishers of the weekly San Marino Tribune have launched an ambitious free, 155,000-circulation weekly newspaper called the Herald Tribune. The newspaper will focus on local news and will be aimed at 11 of the most affluent cities in the San Gabriel Valley, said Publisher Clifton Smith Jr., a San Marino lawyer. Smith said the success of the San Marino Tribune in the seven months since he purchased it with Berkeley W. Johnston, a partner in a Pasadena securities firm, prompted them to start the Herald Tribune. Also involved is Joseph J. Jacobs, chairman of Pasadena-based Jacobs Engineering.
