Robbery Suspect Crashes, Kills Self
IRVINE — A man who robbed a Carl’s Jr. restaurant Thursday night and then fled from police shot himself to death after he lost control of his car and plunged into a ravine, authorities said.
The robbery occurred about 10 p.m. at the restaurant in the 4900 block of Barranca Parkway. Police said the robber used a gun.
The suspect, whose name was not available, was spotted by Irvine police about five minutes later on Jeffrey Road, Police Sgt. Jim Lowder said. He led police on a chase, dropping some cash on the San Diego Freeway as he fled, police said.
Near the intersection of the San Diego Freeway and the Costa Mesa Freeway, the suspect lost control of his car, Lowder said. It went down an embankment into a ravine.
Irvine Sgt. Jim Potts said the man then pulled out a gun and killed himself.
