A man who robbed a Carl’s Jr. restaurant Thursday night and then fled from police shot himself to death after he lost control of his car and plunged into a ravine, authorities said.

The robbery occurred about 10 p.m. at the restaurant in the 4900 block of Barranca Parkway. Police said the robber used a gun.

The suspect, whose name was not available, was spotted by Irvine police about five minutes later on Jeffrey Road, Police Sgt. Jim Lowder said. He led police on a chase, dropping some cash on the San Diego Freeway as he fled, police said.
