LA PALMA : City to Seek U.S. Aid to Fix Streets, Houses

The city is applying for federal block grant funds for next fiscal year to help with street repairs and home-improvement loans to moderate- and low-income families.

The City Council this week unanimously approved those projects in the municipality’s annual application for federal funds. All city governments are eligible for the federal Community Development Block Grant funds, and city councils each year must file formal applications after public hearings.

No residents opted to speak during the City Council’s public hearing on block grants Tuesday night. City Public Works Director Ismile H. Noorbaksh urged the council to apply for $48,000 in federal money for street repairs and $50,000 for low-interest loans and emergency repair grants to families with moderate or low incomes.

Noorbaksh said the streets to be repaired are those south of the Southern California Edison right-of-way, west of Walker Street, north of Moody Creek Channel, and east of Moody Street.

He said the repairs would include asphalt paving and slurry sealing and would cost $96,000. The $48,000 in federal money would be matched with a similar amount from the city’s share of state gasoline taxes, Noorbaksh said.
