NEWBURY PARK : Grandson of Early Ranchers Will Speak

Share

Russell O. Huse, a grandson of one of Conejo Valley’s early ranchers, will deliver a personal account of Conejo Valley history tonight in Newbury Park.

Huse, a retired U.S. Navy publications manager, is the grandson of Abigail and Andrew Russell, who in 1880 purchased a 6,500-acre ranch in what is now Westlake Village. The Russells worked the ranch for 40 years, raising cattle, crops and prize stock horses.

Huse’s 45-minute talk will cover history including the arrival of Conejo Valley’s pioneers, the area’s first public school and the life of the early settlers.

The talk is set for 7:30 p.m. at the Stagecoach Inn Museum, 51 S. Ventura Road.

“I think it will appeal to a lot of people,” said Huse, now in his late 80s. “I sprinkle a little humor through the talk. But there will also be quite a few history buffs there.”

Huse attended the old Conejo School, located on the ranch, in 1915. For the past 22 years, Huse has lived in Westlake Village near the site of the original family homestead.
