Sirens Will Sound Today for San Onofre Emergency Tests

Warning sirens will be heard from Dana Point to San Clemente today when the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station conducts its annual emergency tests.

Between 10 a.m. and noon, 50 sirens will sound in the communities of Dana Point, San Juan Capistrano and San Clemente. The testing, which will last from two to five minutes, will be done twice during the two hours.

In case of an accident involving the nuclear plant, the sirens would sound to alert the public to tune in to the Emergency Broadcast System on television and radio for information.

Though the nuclear plant installed and maintains the sirens, they are activated by local authorities in each city.

“You couldn’t have a button that someone would accidentally bump,” said plant spokesperson Sherry Folsom. “We wouldn’t want to scare anyone.”

Electronic traffic signs will alert drivers on the San Diego Freeway of the impending tests.
