Twelve-year-old Fernando Hernandez, a student at Nicolas Junior High School, was commended Tuesday as a good Samaritan.

The seventh-grader was honored by city and school officials for helping a lost kindergartner get help in finding his way home. “I was walking home when I saw this little boy with a Spider Man backpack crying,” Fernando said. “He said he was lost and kept crying, so I calmed him down and took him to the fire station on Brookhurst [Street] and Valencia” Avenue.

Firefighters were able to track down the lost boy’s grandfather, who came to pick him up. Because of Fernando’s help, officials said, the child reached home safely.

“I’ve never done something like that before,” said Fernando, who lives in Fullerton. “It felt good to do something helpful.”

Nicolas’ principal, Steven E. Keller, said he hopes that, by recognizing good deeds, the school will encourage other young people to help out when opportunities arise.
