Westside : CAT SCARE

Halloween pranksters can make October a scary month for cats--which is exactly what one black feline discovered in Culver City.

A resident called the Los Angeles Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals on Oct. 14, saying that she had found a black cat that had been spray-painted yellow. The woman said the animal was scared and shivering, as if it had been beaten.

The SPCA posted flyers on telephone poles around Culver City this week, notifying residents that an incident of animal abuse had occurred in the area. Animal abuse such as painting a cat is a felony, said SPCA Capt. Dave Havard.

The organization is warning cat owners to take extra precautions with their animals around Halloween, especially if the cats are black. Some people steal cats to use as props in haunted houses or to display during Halloween parties. But when Oct. 31 festivities are over, Havard said, many of the cats end up abandoned.
