U.S. Grand Jury Demands Council Meeting Records

Share

Nearly three years worth of records from meetings of the Pasadena City Council have been subpoenaed by a federal grand jury, authorities said Friday.

The subpoena, which was served Oct. 16, demands all the council’s minutes and agendas, along with videotapes of their public meetings and audiotapes of closed sessions. As is routine with subpoenas, the grand jury does not disclose what is involved in its investigation.

“Everybody is wildly speculating, of course,” said one Pasadena official who spoke on condition of anonymity.

Pasadena’s city attorney could not be reached for comment.

Federal grand juries consist of 23 citizens who serve for a year. Typically, the panel’s duties include weighing evidence brought to it by federal prosecutors to determine whether there is sufficient evidence to charge a suspect with a federal crime, but the grand jury can also investigate suspected wrongdoing on its own.
