HUNTINGTON BEACH : Councilman Launches Tree-Planting Effort

Share

Councilman Ralph Bauer wants the city’s residents to see more green, and to achieve that, he proposes that 200,000 trees be planted by the year 2000.

“There is a certain amount of ugliness in Huntington Beach, and trees can be used to cover some of that ugliness up,” Bauer said. Besides beautifying the city, he said, trees help to absorb pollutants, such as vehicle emissions.

Bauer is spearheading the formation of the Huntington Beach Tree Foundation and has scheduled the inaugural meeting for Nov. 9. At the 7:30 p.m. meeting in City Council chambers, 2000 Main St., the group will elect officers and recruit volunteers.

To plant 200,000 trees “sounds like a big number,” Bauer said. “But there are about 70,000 parcels of land in this city. If there were three additional trees planted per parcel, we’d reach that goal.”

Among other goals are to develop a city master plan to plant trees along major roadways and on street medians.

The foundation will also seek financial contributions and tree donations from individuals and corporations, Bauer said.
