A 19-year-old Oxnard man was shot in the leg by a bike-riding gunman Thursday afternoon on Channel Islands Boulevard near Rose Avenue, an Oxnard police spokesman said.

Francisco Soto was treated and released after being shot about 3 p.m. near Channel Islands High School, the spokesman said.

Police learned of the incident after Soto came into the St. John’s Hospital emergency room about an hour later, said Sgt. Dan Christian, who works with the Oxnard Police Department’s anti-gang enforcement team.

Soto was also riding a bicycle when two bike-riding suspects--thought to be 15 or 16 years old--asked him where he was from before one of them shot him, Christian said.

There has been a spate of gang violence in Oxnard this fall, including three shooting deaths. Police are not sure if this incident is connected to any of the previous shootings.

“Nobody’s cooperating again, so we’re not sure if they’re related at all,” he said.

Police are continuing their investigation.
