Ottawa rookie forward Daniel Alfredsson posted his first NHL hat trick and Don Beaupre stopped 41 shots for his 17th career shutout Thursday night as the surprising Senators defeated slumping Hartford, 5-0, at Hartford, Conn.

Martin Straka and Radek Bonk also scored for the Senators, who moved over .500 for the first time this deep in a season since joining the league in 1992-93.

The Whalers were shut out for the second consecutive game and third time in five games.

Detroit 6, Boston 5--Steve Yzerman, who missed a penalty shot in the first period, scored on his own rebound 1:50 into overtime as the Red Wings overcame a 5-2 deficit for a victory at Boston.

The Bruins led, 5-2, midway through the second period, but Detroit tied it by scoring on three of 14 shots in the period.

San Jose 3, New Jersey 3--Kevin Miller’s goal with nine seconds left in regulation rallied the Sharks to a tie at San Jose.

It was preceded by Shark assistant coach Wayne Thomas asking referee Dennis Larue to measure goaltender Martin Brodeur’s stick with 41 seconds left in regulation. The stick was ruled to be of illegal width, creating a four-on-four situation. San Jose goalie Arturs Irbe went to the bench for an extra attacker and Miller scored.

Florida 2, Philadelphia 1--John Vanbiesbrouck made 21 saves behind a tight Panther defense and Mike Hough had two assists in a victory at Philadelphia.

The Panthers got goals from Rob Niedermayer and Radek Dvorak, offsetting a goal by Eric Lindros.
